Monitoring Services Explained

The following table details the Services that can be monitored, including the actual checks made and an explanation of when email alerts are sent.

Service Checks Alerts
DNS Verifies server is responding to nslookup queries. After a 10 second timeout.
FTP Checks FTP connections with the specified host (or unix socket). After a 10 second timeout.
HTTP Verifies it can open a HTTP connection with the host. Connection refusals and timeouts (10 seconds) send CRITICAL alerts. Incorrect responses send WARNINGS, and other errors send STATE UNKNOWN.
HTTPS Verifies it can open a HTTPS connection with the host. Connection refusals and timeouts (10 seconds) send CRITICAL alerts. Incorrect responses send WARNINGS, and other errors send STATE UNKNOWN.
IMAP Verifies it can make IMAP connections with the specified host (or unix socket). After a 10 second timeout.
IMAPS Verifies it can make SSL IMAP connections with the specified host (or unix socket). After a 10 second timeout.
PING Uses the ping command to probe the specified host for packet loss (percentage) and round trip average (milliseconds). A round trip time of 100ms or 20% packet loss will generate a WARNING. A round trip time of 500ms or 60% packet loss will generate a CRITICAL alert.
POP3 Verifies it can make SSL POP connections with the specified host (or unix socket). After a 10 second timeout.
POP3S Verifies it can make SSL POP connections with the specified host (or unix socket). After a 10 second timeout.
SSH This check will try to connect to an SSH server at the specified host on port 22. After a 10 second timeout.
SMTP Verifies it can open a SMTP connection with the specified host. Connection refusals and timeouts (10 seconds) send CRITICAL alerts. Incorrect responses send WARNINGS, and other errors send STATE UNKNOWN.
SMTPS Verifies it can open a SSL SMTP connection with the specified host. Connection refusals and timeouts (10 seconds) send CRITICAL alerts. Incorrect responses send WARNINGS, and other errors send STATE UNKNOWN.
